Natural Gas Motor Fuel Is Currently More Suitable for Trucks and Public Transportation

In the past year there were 44 new pump stations built for natural gas vehicles. In 2017, the rate of construction is expected to grow by half, i.e. 74 new gas stations, which will be primarily located in Moscow, the Stavropol Krai, and Voronezh Oblast.

"Public utilities employ various machinery: for waste and snow collection, road wetting or vehicle impoundments. Generally, we are talking about 8 ton or heavier trucks. Light vehicles are rarely used by the utilities, only if to clean snow and garbage off the road," confided Alexander Amiragyan, expert of the Analytical Center, to Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Overall utilization of natural-gas-based cars and trucks is bound both by the supply range and a limited number of gas stations available. The expert also reckons that since the utility service vehicles abide by the same refueling principles as gas-powered passenger cars, construction of new gas stations will stimulate the use of gas-powered specialized machinery.

"More extensive financing of public utilities in terms of buying light service vehicles will help to reduce expenses of smaller companies, such as managing companies, in the utility segment. Although the general public should not expect any large-scale effect for themselves," Mr. Amiragyan supposes. He also believes that for now the issue of natural gas fuel is more realistic in the segment of trucks and public transportation due to currently active budget financing programs.
